Shad Khan’s soccer team is really bad

Let’s preface this by saying that, despite any inherent snark, this is very sad. Never in a million (billion?) years would one expect Champaign-Urbana, IL to be home-base to a Premier League owner. Alas, the year is 2019, and Champaign-Urbana is home to both the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the owner Fulham Football Club (both of those owners are the same person, in fairness). It’s a neat thing to be able to tout as a local.

(Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC)

It doesn’t look like that’ll be the case for very long, however. As the calendar turns to Spring it is becoming more and more apparent that Fulham will only spend a single year in the EPL. They currently sit at 19th out of 20 teams, 7 points deep into the relegation zone.

For those who aren’t up on soccer jargon, that’s very bad.

Yesterday, Deadspin wrote this feature about how the team is bursting at the seams and it’s at least got a thread of local interest attached to it.

Illini lose to Wisconsin 60-72

That spread was too small.

I don’t know much about Ethan Happ, and I’m going to keep it that way. I imagine him growing up on a dairy farm in central Wisconsin, growing to a substantial height and shooting shots against a rim hanging on the side of a barn while consuming a steady diet of cheese and sausage, steadily on the journey to become a basketball legend.

He only scored 9 points last night – a formidable showing for the Illini big men.

Everything else was pretty par for the course for this team. It’s the point of the season where fans are starting to come to terms with our bad team and the outrage gets tired. If you have the emotional endurance to keep caring, salute.
